Fitness Tip of the Week
Holidays can be a very stressful time. It is during these moments that we often forget about ourselves. We put others ahead of our own well-being and the result is usually never pretty. So this year, here is what I am proposing for us all: 30 Days of Fitmas to get in great shape before Santa comes down the chimney!
What we are going to do here is not wait for the New Year to make some sort of resolution that, statistically speaking, doesn't usually pan out. We are going to detach from our current situation and take inventory. Take a look at your health as if you are a doctor meeting with a patient. Don't judge yourself, just state the facts. If you are struggling with how to take control of your health, here are a few things I propose that you can start today that won't be a total overhaul to your schedule:

If you are struggling with how to take control of your health, here are a few things I propose that you can start today that won't be a total overhaul to your schedule:
- Time Restricted Eating. Eat what you would normally eat, just keep it within 10-12 hours. This means, if you eat your first meal at 8 am, your final calorie would be consumed by 6 pm. That is ten hours.
- 20 workouts in 30 days. There is a 20 minute minimum for these. Do something over the course of this time that'll get the heart rate elevated and almost break a sweat.
- 10,000 steps per day. A daily walk will go a long way in your fitness journey! Walks are not counted as workouts.
- Sleep 7+ hours each night. This is very important but often neglected. In order to do this, get yourself preparing for bed 8-9 hours before your alarm is set to go off. Start the process of winding down and get to sleep as soon as you can.
- BONUS: Read 10+ pages of non-fiction per day. If it is motivation you need, I recommend Steven Pressfield's The War of Art.
- BONUS: Cut out the booze. This will do nothing but hinder your body and mind.
Is Social Media Killing Youth Sports?
In the early 2000’s, while I was finishing up college, I decided to embark on a coaching journey that lasted for 12 seasons. During this time, I began to see changes in the landscape of sports that I did not anticipate or expect. As a football coach, we would go to games and see the opposing teams' sidelines and wonder, where is everyone? Junior Varsity rosters were shrinking due to low participation and there were times when we had a football game with only 15 kids suited up and barely enough lineman to play. During the wrestling season, we would go to matches and compete against teams that had terrible participation. Some programs had less than ten kids competing between grades 7-12! In more recent years, I hear stories of basketball teams struggling to fill their lineups and soccer programs not getting enough athletes out to have a Junior Varsity team. This baffles me.
