What I've Been Thinking About...
Diversity of thought. I had a few conversations this week that led me down this interesting path. There are a lot of polarizing views out there. For some reason it is common practice to try to destroy those that do not agree with you. I see this in the media with certain topics. I also see this in the fitness industry. In a time where more than two-thirds of the population is overweight, I think it is fair to say that health and/or fitness professionals should be careful about what they say to people. There was a time when young Chris would be critical of certain methods out there. Lets use for example step aerobics. I would say, these people should stop the aerobics and start jacking some steel. He may have also said it in a not so polite way. But older Chris knows better... I think. Like most things in life fitness is multi-factoral. Maybe this individual likes the social aspect of the class. Maybe they like the teacher and have a bunch of friends that keep her them coming to class. If I were to tell that person to stop the aerobics and start lifting weights they may lose that desire. They may no longer adhere to a fitness program because some personal trainer told them step aerobics was crap. It is a flawed approach that does not help out anyone. Something is better than nothing and instead of tearing down we should try to find the positive in what they are doing and try to help them build off of that! News & Notes This winter was a rough one. The 40+ inches of melted snow has left most sport fields a soggy mess. On top of that, if there are dry fields available, they are all booked! I couldn't believe when I heard that last year, one team had only one practice before their games began. That is not an optimal ratio of practice to games if you ask me! Warmer weather and brighter days has brought on a lot of happiness around the farm. Outdoor training has begun and over the course of the next couple of weeks, we will be expanding our outside training area which has me excited. The goal will be to create a space that can accommodate larger groups and potentially sports teams. This week we will be hosting our first practice out here. More on this to come! Fitness Tip of the Week You down with GPP? No, that was not a typo and this is not a tribute to Naughty by Nature. This is all about General Physical Preparation aka GPP! Unfortunately the answer to that question for most coaches and parents seems to be an emphatic NO! We are in a time where everything needs to happen now. Sport/skill specialization is incredibly popular and often times kids miss out on one important aspect of development: General Physical Preparation. In the prepubescent years, kids need to learn how to do a variety of things. They should be able to jump rope, do a forward roll, climb ropes, perform pushups, run around like maniacs, and all the other crazy stuff kids have done in years past. Learning this stuff at a young age will give you a large bag of tricks to pull from when you get older and start focusing on sport more. The idea in these early years is to build a wide foundation to build upon and GPP does this for you. If you want more on this topic, I recorded a 40 minute podcast covering everything. You will get a better understanding of what GPP is, the top 10 exercises for young kids to practice, how to implement these exercises, and more! You can watch the full upisode here on Youtube: You Down With GPP or listen to the audio on Stitcher by clicking here: Chris Fluck Podcast on Stitcher. This episode is also available on Apple and Google podcasts. What I've Been Watching... Murder Among the Mormon's on Netflix We stumbled upon this series last week as I was trying to watch something with a little substance. No knock on Schitt's Creek or Cobra Kai but I needed some real life intrigue and this show fits the bill! We are currently half way through and there has been a series a twists and turns that I did not see coming. Here is hoping to a good finale! Quote of the Week "Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds" -- Albert Einstein I hope you all have an awesome week! Chris Fluck
